Tomato Harvest

Today we harvested most of the tomatoes from our garden! We planted loads of tomatoes in May but lost about 40% of our early crop due to blossom rot. We had a very dry August and a resultant bountiful Labor Day harvest. I spent my entire school holiday cooking! I borrowed some recipes from several cultures! Today I made a lovely Italian tomato sauce. (Jeff Smith's recipe) I slowly pot roasted a beef chuck roast and and added this to the sauce. (Now I have some very rich beef stock for a future meal) We enjoyed an excellent dinner with shredded beef and pasta. I made a delicious Tabouli salad last week with Arrowhead Mills Organic bulgur wheat, my own homegrown tomatoes, onions and mint. I had to purchase lemons and scallions. The tabouli was so good last week that I made a double batch today. I also made a delectable Gazpacho. The tabouli and gazpacho recipes came from the original Moosewood cookbook ( the hippy cooking bible). We still have lots of tomatos around for tomato sandwiches. Whatever remains goes into a plastic container with garlic, basil, and olive oil for bruschetta. I am looking for more tomato recipes! If you have any, please comment!

I would comment further, Neetzy, but my keyboard is full of drool.

Our tomatoes did the same thing...they all ripened at the same time. I don't have nearly as many as you do...but I can't figure out what to do with them all yet.

Dive,

Stop drooling for God's sake. I wish I could send some over to you!

Shazza,

They aren't Jersey tomatoes but they are sweet and delicious! We'll probably have to can some. (probably the Roma plums) I just prefer them fresh. Pretty soon I'll have little canker sores all over the tip of my tongue from these, but it's a small price to pay.

I've got more tomatoes than I can handle, Neetzy. If I knew your address you'd be finding boxes of the darned things on your doorstep.
We never learn … We crave the things all spring and plant WAY too many and then everybody is trying to give 'em away come late august.
I tell myself that next year I'll only have one plant but I know I'll have a forest of the monsters.
Now my freezer and cupboards are full and my squashes are ripening.
AUGH!
Hey ho.

Dive,

At least we didn't plant squash. We planted peppers. I brought them into my painting shed for still life studies and many of them went rotten.

My sweet peppers have been charred, peeled and bottled in olive oil and herbs as antipasti, though I've got a couple of hundred chilis getting ready to ripen, too. I still have loads of dried ones left over from last year. What is it that makes us plant too much stuff?

Yummmm Neetzy. I eat tomatoes until they make give me mouth ulcers as well. Then I may slack off a bit, but not all the way. I figure I'll suffer for all the good lycopene. ;)
I love my Moosewood cookbook. I can't remember if it is the original or not but anything I've attempted from it I've thoroughly enjoyed. Seems like the hummus recipe is in that one. That Molly lady who makes those does such a cute job with them.

Dive,
That sounds delicious once again. I will probably post my painting of peppers in progress one of these days. (How's that for alliteration? Planting is such a hopeful time.

Shan,

My entire family is suffering from mouth ulcers! Daughter A and husband each have their own tube of mouth medicine. Mollie Katzen wrote the Moosewood Cookbook series. I have the original but she wrote several! I love her recipes.
