New Painting Finally!

Finally I am posting one of my new paintings.
Apple Harvest Afternoon 22x28
oil on canvas
I have been working on this painting forever it seems.
I snapped a picture on the tree line, while waiting in the long line of traffic after the Apple Harvest festival in Arendstville, PA. I liked the quality of the afternoon light. I wished I could paint on sight, but knew that would be impossible. Afternoon light is so fleeting. I wish I could be like Monet. Monet had several canvasses lined up. He painted on each one at the same time every day. Oh well, I am not Monet. I have a day time job. I also have a digital camera.
I started this painting using only a palette knife. There are layers and layers upon layers of paint.
The sky gave me fits. I started with palette knife, but it looked too busy. I came in and used a brush in the end to make it softer.
Then we got all this snow. The paint wouldn't dry. I tried to frame it and smeared it. I had to touch up the sky again.
A love/hate relationship with this painting.
I have a couple of others that are at my March solo show. The show is in a little coffeehouse. They play live music. It is a small room in an old Victorian house. It is a non-profit organization that offers art and music lessons to children. It is not very glamourous, but it is a show.

At first I thought I was looking at a Monet, until I read the text. Oh my, it's gorgeous!!! And it's completely authentic, meaning I've never seen anything quite like it. And I mean that in a GOOD way.

I know you live a very busy life so it's hard to make time to paint. But you simply must because you're very talented. Good luck with the show!

It IS a show, Neetzy! Your show! I think it's fantastic and I only wish I could be there in person to walk around and "ooh and aah" over every piece.
Not Monet, no, but I think he would appreciate it nonetheless.

This is another really fine painting. Love/hate often works to the best in the end.

Your friend,
Kat

Did you sell this one? How big is it? How much are you asking for it? It's exactly our taste. Seriously. How much?

Janelle,

Thanks! I really wasn't trying to paint like Monet. I am inspired by him however. There was an amazing show at the Baltimore Museum of Art a couple of years ago. It featured Monet's paintings of London. I am inspired by natural light. I am also inspired by your paintings.

I worked really hard to try to capture this in my way. At the end I thought maybe I overworked it too much. I have been in a fighting mood with paint lately.

Kat,

Again, I was inspired by Monet's poplars, but I think I approached this in a different way.

The show was just hung yesterday. The painting is 22x28. I'll send you the price b/c I have to look it up! (Not much of a business person am I?)

It is framed in black and gold. My favorite frame this year.

I love the light and shadows in this Anita!

Wow, what a wonderful painting! I too LOVE the way you've captured the light. If I lived closer I'd happily meet you at that coffee shop to discuss your painting on display.

Thanks Shazza. Thanks Katie.

It was a labor of love and hate with this one. It is a cross between maniacal and overwork. I'm glad it translates into something you like.

WOW!
Neetzy, this one just grabbed me by the eyeballs and pulled me right into it.
Fabulous intense colours and wonderful composition as always. I love seeing all the marks close up.
I confess my first thought was 'Monet, eat your heart out' as it reminded me of his poplars series. Yes, it's that good. The splash of sunlight on the grass is glorious; pure Cezanne colours and a great contrast with the gold at the back.
I love this so much!
Dammit, I wish I could cross this pesky pond and come to your show.
More, more, more, please!

Dive,

Thanks. I always value your commentary. I thought I might have "worked" this one too much. I was pushing the envelope, I just thought I might have pushed too far. That fine line thing, you know...

You are definitely on the right side of that fine line with this one, Neetzy. It blew me away.

Dive,

I have to listen to sweary music when I'm in my attack mode. Modest Mouse & Vampire Weekend lately - not screamo but sweary.

That is lovely and the colors work just right.

Thanks Maria. I love you all. I liked this painting, but didn't feel good about it. I thank you all for your positive feedback.

Yes, I know about that - a love-hate relationship, but now I hope it's a Love relationship:)?
Great to have a show, Neetzy! Since we can't be there, you have to tell us all about it (with pics of course!)
BTW I love your painting - it has that fleeting memory feeling for me!

Thanks Jeannette,

It was a "fleeting" moment. The end of a day, the end of a festival, the end of the growing season. I'm glad I was able to capture that for you. That's what painting is about don't you think?

Thanks for all your warm wishes! I'm not getting that from the proprietor of the place. (I overheard her telling a customer that she prefers dealing with musicians over artists).

Hello Anita, I was looking through the next blog to mine and I stumbled on to your blog and what a nice surprise it was! Congratulations, I like this landscape very much, the scene has a freshness that I wasn't sure whether it was pastels or not, until you mentioned a spatula. I like it how you rendered the light against the dark. I share your feeling when you finally put the last brush-stroke on your painting and its finally done. It is like a Eureka moment isn't it? I wish you all the very best on your solo show!

Maria,

Thanks so much. I've been painting frenetically with a palette knife lately. I have much less control! I love it. I don't like it when I get too picky with things. This all started when I was painting reflections on water. I was worried about losing the "smoothness". I did a second painting with an attack mentality and liked it much better!

I tried to post earlier but it didn't show up. 40% is way to high. I always go for 20% after all they are not doing any work for you, just lending you a wall. I really hate this greed in people by the time you have spent on the frames and paid the commission.. to get to exhibit here there is a wait of a year!... I have tried to see your painting of the seals and the holstein, I'm not not too versed in computers! So maybe when its not too late and have a bit to time to work out how to see them. Anyway, I still wish you good luck with the show. Also remember the recession so maybe there will be people who would love to buy the paintings but cannot afford to get them.

neetzy said...

Maria,

I don't think I posted the holsteins or the seals yet. I know I didn't post the seals. I had to rush to get them framed. The cows are hanging in the gallery too. Come to think of it, I didn't post them either. Those may have to wait til after the show. I don't think I have current paintings.

I thought 40% was ridiculous. She acts like she's doing me a huge favor.

I love this painting. I, too, thought Monet when I saw it. I sure know what you mean by love/hate. Having the persistence to keep going is, I think, what makes a real artist.

Barbara.

Thanks. Monet is always an inspiration. That man had amazing patience. I don't have that. I cannot spend an hour a day at one scene, but I do have a digital camera. Wahaha!
